While we are in the middle of the prime renovation season, the one question I always urge clients to ask is “Should I upgrade my lighting?” The answer is almost always “yes”. Lighting isn’t quite as easy as changing out a throw pillow or bedspread so I suggest you make the effort while you are already under construction. If you don’t, you may end up wishing you did months or years down the road and you have to go through the construction process all over again.
LED fixtures or bulbs make a huge difference in the look and feel of your space starting with a brighter light. The way LED’s emit light “looks” so much brighter than a traditional bulb. You can also choose to add additional lights to your space or make better use of the ones you currently have by upgrading the style and function. Don’t underestimate that lighting can set the mood for your home.
NO MORE CHANGING BULBS
If changing light bulbs is one of your least favorite things to do, LEDs are definitely for you! Long life is the number one benefit of LED lights. Most standard LED’s last 15,000 – 25,000 hours. That means if you left the bulb on for 5 hours a day everyday, then you wouldn’t have the change the bulb for 8-13 years. And even after those years are up, the LED’s don’t actually burn out. Instead, they emit a lower output and it over time will just become less bright.
Of course LED lights are more energy efficient, but just how much more efficient? A traditional incandescent bulb spends more than 80% of its energy creating heat to light the element inside. The way LED bulbs create light does not require heat and therefore only 10-20% of its energy used goes towards heat.
It’s safe to say that over the years the weather elements have become harsher and the temperatures more extreme. Newer light fixtures are created to withstand these elements a bit better. The older style brass fixtures that used to rust now have protective coating to keep that shine a bit longer.
With changes in styles, come changes in technology. You can now get color selectable lights for recessed lights, under cabinet lights, bulbs and much more! Not only can you change color temperatures (color of the light), but the range of dimming has greatly increased with the LED lights. Also, with new smart technology you can ask your Alexa to turn on your lights.
With all of these great benefits, you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain by upgrading your home’s lighting. As always, it’s best to consult a lighting expert to make sure you are getting the right products for your space.
